First Graders

The girls are into their first few weeks of 1st grade. There have been a few new discoveries and learning that's happened along the way.

The first thing that surprised the girls was the length of the school day. Before the first day of school the girls, as usual, pack up their lunch boxes for the next day. It took me 10 minutes to explain to them that they needed to pack a full lunch - that a fruit snack was not going be enough food for the whole day. What finally hit home was to tell them that they were going to be at school as long their friend Adam (who's 9) was at school last year. Their eyes got big, "Wow!"

What excited them most about the first day of school - a common theme as I've talked to other moms - is that they have three recesses AND the that they get to play on the big kid playground.

There in the playground, they have found the ultimate challenge: the monkey bars! As the picture will attest, the monkey bars have taken their toll on hands and knees, but the girls continue to play on them undeterred. In fact, they find the blisters a badge of honor to be proudly displayed.
