A recent conversation

For the last several months, the girls have been trying to understand the concept of death. How they understand things is ask questions. A million, give or take a few. For some reason, they currently have this idea that Joe is going to die after Christmas. This seems kind of morbid until you realize they really don't understand what it means to die but leads to strange conversations nonetheless. Here is the conversation we had today when I was washing dishes:

"How long until Christmas?" Sasha starts.

"Three weeks" I reply as I show her on the calendar.

"And then Daddy dies?"

"No, Daddy is not going to die after Christmas."

"After his birthday, Daddy will die?"

"No, Daddy isn't going to die for a long time."

"When is Daddy going to die?" Erika gets in the conversation.

"No one knows exactly when they will die. But Daddy is not going to die for a long time."

"After Christmas, Daddy will be old?"

"Daddy will be older but not very old."

Silence for a few seconds. Then Sasha asks "Mommy, can you take lots of pictures of Daddy so that when he dies we can remember what he looks like?"

"Yes, Sasha."

End of conversation.
